So after a few deep breaths and some calming tea, I have come up with books that will let me stop with ease and yet welcome me back with open flaps the next day: Curry: Reading, Eating, and Race by Naben Ruthnum This is a short collection of essays that explore how a dish that doesn’t technically exist can both bind and ostracize various peoples and cultures. Of course, it is far more complex than that, so despite its length Curry is the perfect lunch read. Ruthnum’s writing demands some time away from the page, it asks you to unpack what you’ve just read and re-examine your own ideas on food and people. The essays are sure to be kicking around in your brain long after you’ve put Curry downâ€"which is precisely what makes it easy to dive back in the next day. Dead Light March by Daniel José Older This novella is the latest in the Shadowshaper Cypher series by Older. It is set between the first book Shadowshaper and the sequel novella Ghost Girl in the Corner and before the upcoming Shadowhouse Fall novel. Except, in my opinion, it could also serve as a good introduction to the series. In my case, it served as a reminder of all the reasons I love Older’s work. Partly fantasy and partly social critique, it caused So Many Feelings. It was nice to put down the book before I was moved to yell THIS IS SOME GOOD SHIT to nobody in particular. Cucumber Quest by Gigi D. G. I don’t know if everyone puts off reading their comic hauls for months at a time, but personally I don’t want to power through everything so fast that the wait for the next comic festival feels unbearably long. And yet, I also don’t want the excitement of new comics to fade away. So, every once in a while, I take a break from non-fiction like Curry and pick something from my TCAF haul to delight in. Cucumber Quest (Volume 1) is a stand-out favourite for me this year. It offers a fresh (yes, ‘tis a pun) and adorable take on the Chosen One trope, while joyfully muddling gender stereotypes in fantasy. You could finish it all in one go, or pace yourself and read a chapter per lunch break. It’ll always welcome you back and wave you goodbye, depending on what your schedule demands. The Second Mango by Shira Glassman I read this a while ago, but I remember taking a lot of breaks between reading this, the first book in the Mangoverse series. The Second Mango is a sweet romance/adventure with lots of moments to swoon over and food mentions to drool over. I can see this being the perfect thing to read while digging into some comfort food in the middle of a stressful day at work. In fact, I think I’ll make the next book, Climbing the Date Palm, my new lunch break read. So far, it seems that this is the range of what I can handle during my breaks: short non-fiction, novellas that aren’t too intense, and fun adventures/romances. Polanski simply eliminates this scene and shows Malcolm back in Scotland. The reason I feel that Polanski did this is that the scene detracts from the continuity and action of the play. The play is equally effective without the scene, and more streamlined. Another difference between the original and Polanski's version is the scene where MacBeth kills the king, Duncan. In the original, Shakespeare was not allowed to show the death of a divine right ruler, so he showed MacBeth coming out of the king's bedchamber after he had committed the murder. For Polanski's version, however, he had no such limitation, and could show anything that he chose, so he showed the actual murder of Duncan, where Duncan wakes up, and MacBeth cuts his throat after stabbing him. The reason that Polanski inserted this scene was to show how cold-blooded MacBeth was, and that he would do anything to achieve his goal of becoming king. A third difference is the use of the letter that MacBeth writes to his wife describing how he has become Thane of Cawdor and the witches' three predictions. In Polanski's version, Lady MacBeth takes out the letter after everything with her and her husband's plan has gone wrong, reads it, and then kills herself. She reads the letter, and it's all this happy news, but she and MacBeth are miserable, and all the good things in the letter have gone awry. The most common approach uses primary treatment (screening and clarification) to remove solids; aerobic, suspended growth, activated sludge secondary treatment to reduce organic pollutants; and chlorine disinfection to reduce pathogens. Secondary treatment is the largest energy consumer (30 to 60% of total plant usage), followed by pumping and sludge processing. Although suspended growth, activated sludge is the most common wastewater treatment process, it is not the most energy efficient. Aerated lagoons, trickling filters and rotating biological contactors are significantly more efficient. They are not as widely used because aerated lagoons require a large land area, and trickling filters and rotating biological contactors are better suited for smaller capacity applications. Many wastewater treatment plants are shifting from chlorine-based disinfection to UV disinfection to eliminate the risk of storage and handling of toxic chemicals. Although UV disinfection is energy intensive, it adds no chemical residue to the effluent. This feature is particularly important for discharge to sensitive aquatic environments or for wastewater reuse. In general, low pressure UV systems are substantially more efficient than medium pressure systems. Energy efficiency opportunities in wastewater treatment include the use of fine bubble diffusers, dissolved oxygen control of aeration, high efficiency blowers, variable frequency drives on pumps and blowers, premium efficiency motors, and the reduction of the head against which pumps and blowers operate. A treatment system consists of primary sedimentation preceding and final sedimentation following the rotating biological contactors. The existence of social class and status groups has even been questioned and whether it is a positive or negative thing. This ethnography explores groups of class and how distinctions between individuals on a macro level can affect their micro level interactions in everyday life. The differences between individuals macro distribution would not have any effect if they were not illustrated in everyday micro level encounters and thus class and status groups would not be formed. The ethnographic research conducted for this analysis is of social class groups of women in a local cafà ©. For this study I visited this cafà © three mornings in a row and observed the daily activities of the local resident’s comings and goings. The first morning everything seemed to run just as a typical cafà © would run, women gathering for brunch or morning tea, business people grabbing their coffee on their way to important meetings and the usual.
